Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has opened up on the Blues' goalkeeper situation following their failed attempt to sign Mike Maignan earlier this summer.

Chelsea had been hoping to offload their current No.1 goalkeeper, Robert Sanchez, and replace him with AC Milan's Maignan before they travelled to the United States to face the trials and tribulations of the Club World Cup. However, the west London side were unable to reach an agreement with the Rossoneri in time due to the Serie A side's demands.

The Blues have now travelled to the Club World Cup with Sanchez, Filip Jorgensen and new arrival Mike Penders as their goalkeeper options. Maresca has now expressed his belief that Chelsea's 'situation is simple' as he explained that Sanchez will be the starting goalkeeper with Jorgensen playing second fiddle, while they continue to monitor Penders' progress. The Italian also refused to be drawn on the pursuit of Maignan.

Speaking to the media, Maresca said: "The keeper situation is simple, Robert is No.1, Filip is No.2, and we will analyse and judge Penders. Maignan and different players at other clubs – I don't think it is worth talking about them."

Maresca and Chelsea will return to action on Monday, June 16, against LAFC in their Club World Cup opener at Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The Blues are the favourites to reach the knockout stages from Group D. They will likely resume their pursuit of Maignan after the tournament.
