Japhet Tanganga has been in exceptional form for Tottenham Hotspur and one has to think he is fast becoming the club’s Player of the Season.
This is a player who has graduated from the academy and already appears to be one of their own in the first-team, and who again held his own against Manchester City last Sunday.
Per WhoScored, he has averaged a rating of 7.44 in the Premier League.
Steven Bergwijn, the new signing who scored a brilliant volley against City on his debut last weekend, is the only Spurs player with a higher average rating.
Tanganga, of course, has played just three games in the top-flight, but he has a higher average rating than the likes of Harry Kane, with 7.30, Serge Aurier, with 7.29, and Son Heung-Min, with 7.23.
Already he looks an assured, assiduous member of the Spurs backline, playing exceptionally well against both City and Liverpool.
In each game, he played in a different position; versus the Reds, he was played at right-back, against City, he was at left-back.
Throughout the campaign, he has averaged 3.7 tackles per game, 2 interceptions, 6.3 clearances, and 1 block.
He already looks at home in the backline and his ability to slot straight into Jose Mourinho’s defence has been one of the stories of Spurs’ campaign.

Of course, he has not been sullied by the end of Mauricio Pochettino’s reign, in which a number of players appeared to down tools as the club tasted numerous humiliating defeats, including that 7-2 thumping at the hands of Bayern Munich and the 3-0 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion.
But he has been superb under Mourinho, playing well in numerous matches, but notably against the top two in the Premier League.
He has yet to have a bad game and if he continues this form, he should be in consideration to be named the club’s Player of the Season.
